Discovering the Gifts

Throughout the Family Enrichment Weekend there is an effort to discover the unique characteristics of each family member. A father who has designed and constructed equipment for his child, a mother who has designed toys and clothing, parents who have developed a curriculum to home school their children, children who have acting, musical, or artistic talent–all are “discovered” at the Family Enrichment Weekend and given the opportunity to share their talents and skills. It is important that each family member feels that they are valued and important to the family.  Sharing talents and skills helps builds the self-esteem that sometimes gets lost in a family where so much energy is directed to the child with autism. The Family Enrichment Weekend is also an opportunity for the family to see their child with autism in a positive light.  Because the event is set up to prevent behavior problems and accommodate even the most difficult child, the child with autism has an opportunity to share his/her talents and is encouraged to do so.  Parents hold their breath as their child runs up on the stage and grabs the guitar or microphone, only to be surprised as the Family Fun Guys shape that exuberance into a charming performance that earns a round of applause.  A child who has difficulty joining in the dance, finds his place helping fill the water glasses and putting them out for all the dancers.  This attention to each individual helps families see the importance of appreciating each family member and what he/she brings to the family unit.
